FAQs for students considering your final ECE Senior Design semester...

Remote Accommodation

Yes, we plan to accommodate Remote students.

Choice of project & needed resources is managed by the team & Advisor and should be informed by the remote versus residential availability of team members and their fabrication & instrumentation access (whether or not Georgia Tech's).

To the degree that it can be fostered, it is desirable to mix residential and remote students. It is desired that a majority of the team be residential.

Remote or Special Accommodations students should not affect ECE4873 participation.

Advisors and teams will need to handle on an ad hoc basis students who unpredictably become remote (e.g. go into quarantine).

Team Formation for possible course formats

We prefer to maintain team sizes of 4-6 students. Larger teams become unmanageable, and smaller teams place too much burden on individuals.

Final Semester of Two-Semester ECE-only (ECE4011 prerequisite)

ECE4011 alumni

already are affiliated with the team formed in their ECE4011 semester,
register for ECE4873DA2,
are assumed to having committed to their team for the two-semester duration to achieve their Senior Design graduation requirement, and
are welcome to take additional Design courses if they wish.

You are welcome to participate in the ECE-only Townhall meeting listed below. The Week 1 activities for the single-semester ECEs are unlikely to be helpful to you.

One-Semester Multidisciplinary and One-Semester ECE-only Teams

In this chronological order, teams will be formed who then can bid on projects to which faculty Advisors then will be affiliated.

ECE Multidisciplinary and ECE-only sections may take the August 17 & 19 opportunities to meet jointly with the all Multidisciplinary and ME-only.
Noting that these slides are oriented for MEs, it may help for you to see ME's Dr. Jariwala's August 11 Multidisciplinary slides prior to attending.

Team Formation will be via projects.gatech.edu which will be populated with projects initiated by students, faculty, and external sponsors.

You are welcome and encouraged to form teams and investigate or initiate projects prior to the semester's start.

Understanding that you have many mechanisms for interacting online, these Piazza fora are established for you to interact in identifying teams for

Multidisciplinary
ECE-only

You are welcome to use whatever mechanisms you wish including social media to interface and form teams.
If you are not affiliated with a team by the deadline, course instructors will randomly assign you to a team.

Students wishing to swap between Single-Semester ECE-only and ECE Multidisciplinary are welcome to do so by changing registration to your desired section before registration ends. We recommend against trying during the last few seconds of registration.
If you earned credit for ECE 3006 (Professional Communications), you may need a permit and so contact our lovely ECE Academic Advisors.
Otherwise, you probably can do it yourselves online. But if you get stuck, contact our ECE Academic Advisors.

Team Formation and Project Affiliation should be completed as suggested in the ECE4873 Schedule. While there may be some flexibility regarding Team Formation prior, the Saturday Project Submission deadline is firmer.

Multidisciplinary teams probably will adhere to the deliverables and will have a Primary Advisor affiliated with the majority of team student majors.
Multidisciplinary teams may have one or more Secondary Advisors affiliated with the majors of the non-majority major participants.

Townhall meetings prior to Week 1 are listed below to facilitate Q&A and team formation with the first meetings for students interested in

Multidisciplinary is August 11 Tuesday 5:15pmEDT at https://bluejeans.com/380137093 (ME's Dr. Jariwala's August 11 Multidisciplinary slides slides)

ECE-only is August 12 Wednesday 5:15pmEDT at https://bluejeans.com/213280227

If proposing an ECE-only or Multidisciplinary project, earlier postings to projects.gatech.edu will foster more responses.

If your ECE4873MD1 or ECE4873D1A team does not submit a Backup Project, you team will be assigned a project topic. Do not let this happen as this is YOUR Senior Design semester. Please identify a topic which you might enjoy.

For accessing the projects.gatech.edu web site, see this HowTo. You will need to use your Georgia Tech Account Name (e.g. ws35) but generate your own password. Do not use your official Georgia Tech password as the host for projects.gatech.edu is not yet integrated with Georgia Tech login mechanisms.

If you get stuck when entering your interests or other fields in projects.gatech.edu, you can edit by saving then going to the "My Profile" tab, then editing whichever fields need changing.

If you believe that you have an external sponsor, please contact Professor Frazier as he handles external sponsors.

If not addressed in these FAQs, then use your section's Canvas' Piazza to address questions of concern possibly to other students and to assist with team formation.

All ECE4873 students are asked via a Canvas poll to share

remote versus non-remote status
time zone
ability to access project-specific resources (e.g. many student have access to fabrication facilities independent of campus)

Accumulated FAQs

When, where, and how your group meets is up to your Faculty Advisor.

Exchange all emails regarding Institute business using your Georgia Tech email account.

You will have a much better chance of being heard by instructors if "ECE4873" and your team number (coming) and team name appears in your email subject line.

If you have questions which other students might also have, use your Piazza forum to that all involved parties and informed by the exchange.

Please refrain from using Canvas messages to instructors for any as email sent directly to instructors may receive responses more quickly.

Yes, particularly with the intention of empowering teams with remote participants, we intend to provide options to reimburse authorized student project purchases, but check with your advisor.

Yes, presently scheduled for 2020 November 23 Monday, we hope to host an online Capstone Design Expo near semester's end as was done during 2020 Summer.

Yes, we plan to use Canvas during the semester, but this site affords us a point of access while final semester ECE Senior Design candidates may yet to have registered and have Canvas access.

Yes, infiniteblue.com is the authorized external host for the ECE-only and Multidisciplinary site to which you will be taken for hosting candidate projects and teams from https://capstone.gatech.edu/marketplace and http://projects.gatech.edu. For these sites, see this HowTo. You will need to use your Georgia Tech Account Name (e.g. ws35) but generate your own password. Do not use your official Georgia Tech password as the host for projects.gatech.edu is not yet integrated with Georgia Tech login mechanisms.

CreateX (ECE4873X & ECE4873LX, formerly GT 4823 E_X ) has a different set of requirements than ECE4873 DA2 Second Semester of Two-Semester ECE Senior Design, ECE4873 DA1 Single-Semester ECE-only Senior Design, and ECE4873 MD1 Single-Semester Multidisciplinary Senior Design. You are welcome to contact ME's Craig Richard Forest for details. CreateX will not fulfill your Senior Design graduation requirement after this semester.

Additional pitches to ECEs for projects may be included on Canvas under Media Gallery.

Please respond to the Canvas poll so that instructors and Advisors are able to plan for your team.

To protect your team from the potential decision of Georgia Tech going all-remote, consider what critical supplies you might need from our laboratories and be willing to visit or contact our laboratory staff (Kevin Ferri <kferri6@gatech.edu>, James Steinberg <james.steinberg@ece.gatech.edu>) to learn if we have what you need and to have it checked out to you sooner rather than later.

As with your Proposal, your Weekly Reports are written with what you know at the time that you write them.
